The Breast Cancer Research Foundation announces a partnership with Healthy Hispanic Living to increase breast cancer awareness in the Latina community. The partnership commences on February 1st with a 90-day breast cancer campaign to advance Hispanic women’s understanding of the disease and their risk while also inspiring them and their families to lead healthier lives.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for Hispanic women. Their breast cancers are more likely to be detected at an advanced stage, causing treatment options to be fewer and less effective. By understanding their risk, becoming better educated about preventative care and learning how to navigate conversations with their doctors, they can take control of their health and become more active players in their health care.
“We are honored to partner with BCRF in their pursuit to authentically engage with the growing Hispanic population and the demand for in-culture education and preventive care methods,” said Glenn Llopis, CEO & Founder, Center for Hispanic Leadership. “Our goal is to leverage the strengths of our respective platforms to accelerate breast cancer awareness and the need for self-advocacy amongst Latinas; to encourage new conversations we can all learn from and that will inspire the Hispanic community as a whole to take action.”
Educational online platform Healthy Hispanic Living will launch the 90-day breast cancer campaign providing informative content, tools and resources tailored to the Latina community. From February till April, BCRF and its esteemed physicians and scientists will offer expertise on genetics, inherited risk and prevention, along with insight on new treatments and quality-of-life care. BCRF and Healthy Hispanic Living will also utilize the platform to advocate for more breast cancer research on Latinas due to the fact that the community remains understudied and underserved.
“We are please to have this partnership with Healthy Hispanic Living,” said Myra Biblowit, President of BCRF. “It provides BCRF with a highly focused platform to connect with the Hispanic community on the importance of breast cancer education, prevention and supporting research to improve outcomes and save lives.”
The 90-day campaign also includes a breast cancer challenge, encouraging Hispanic women to “Get Educated, Share Their Story and Get Screened.” One of the goals of the campaign is to motivate one million Latinas to take the initiative and get screened, therefore inspiring others, multiplying their influence and fueling more research, awareness and outreach for the community as a whole.
As part of BCRF’s efforts to reduce disparities in breast cancer, the foundation supports research to better understand the differences in genetic and biological risk factors across populations, improve access to genetic testing in high-risk minority groups, develop innovative means to eradicate barriers to preventive screening, and address health inequities across the cancer care continuum to improve outcomes in vulnerable populations.
