In the United States, pain is the most common reason individuals consult with a physician, yet for many – especially the Hispanic community – pain is a very sensitive topic especially among cancer patients. However, through culturally-relevant education on how best to manage pain, patients can empower themselves to have an active voice in their healthcare and learn how their cancer journey can be pain free.
Clinical researcher and educator at City of Hope
Lina Mayorga is a clinical researcher and educator in the department of Clinical Research Training Office and General Medical Education at City of Hope. Lina began as a volunteer at COH 15 years ago in the bone marrow unit during high school. Her educational background is in Epidemiology, Health Education and Biostatistics. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. Her experience includes spearheading the development, evaluation of multiple educational programs for Spanish speaking patients and the community, including pain management, eating hints during cancer treatment and physical activity and nutrition. As well as, developing bilingual clinical educational materials and conducting research studies on educational interventions. She has presented her findings and research at multiple national and international conferences as well as publications.
