A mentoring relationship is successful when it lasts forever.
The mentor stays in touch with you throughout your journey and is always there when called upon. A good mentor recognizes that they played an important role in your development at that specific moment in your career or life. They do not indefinitely assume the mentor role – unless the mentee acknowledges this intention. The most responsible mentors are aware that their mentees mature along the way and hope to support them as they continue to evolve in and outside of the workplace. When and if the mentee outgrows the relationship, a good mentor will understand and respect their decision – but nevertheless still feel good inside knowing they made a difference in their success.
