When it comes to STEM education, the U.S. is not faring well compared to other countries. According to World Economic Forum statistics cited by Level Playing Field Institute, the nation ranks “52nd in the quality of mathematics and science education” and “27th in developed nations in the proportion of college students receiving undergraduate degrees in science or engineering.”
Academic Programs Administrator, City of Hope
Kate Sleeth, Ph.D., earned her doctoral degree from the University of Reading in the UK investigating DNA repair mechanisms through biochemical approaches. She performed postdoctoral research at the University of Sheffield investigating DNA repair using molecular biology techniques. Sleeth then utilized both biochemistry and molecular biology as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Oxford optimizing a novel radiopharmaceutical.
After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope she transitioned into a role in the institutions Professional Education department. She is currently the Academic Programs Administrator giving her the opportunity to direct the summer academy; she is also responsible for graduate student recruitment, admissions and their professional development. She has international experience in science and public communications through scientific papers, a book chapter, high school visits, science festivals, posters, presentations and a blog on www.Biocareers.com<http://www.biocareers.com/>. Sleeth was involved with the Postdoctoral Association at the City of Hope for over 3 years, previously serving as social chair and President. She is a member of the NPA Board of Directors and currently serves as the Oversight Officer. She also serves as the liaison for the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) and helps organize campus events at the City of Hope.
