La Gota de la Vida

The goal of the La Gota de la Vida campaign, a joint effort between Be the Match and City of Hope, is to save lives and create awareness about important issues affecting the Hispanic community members health, through a variety of festivals and public service announcements nationwide. Using the campaign to educate and promote participation in the health and overall well-being of the community.

La Gota educates the public, letting them know that:

  • Research shows that Latinos are the 3rd largest community to suffer from cancer, yet they are the least likely to participate in the bone marrow registry program.
  • This year, of the total amount of Hispanics diagnosed with a disease curable through bone marrow transplant, only 5% will receive a transplant.
Over 4.5 million Latinos adults have been diagnosed with diabetes. It is estimated that nearly half of Latino children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.
  • Each year more than 35,000 people are diagnosed with a disease for which a bone marrow or blood cell transplant could be a cure. Unfortunately only 2,500 will find a match and, of those, only 180 will be Hispanics. This is due to the relatively low number of Hispanics in the registry.
